| Provides on-site and community-based programs for children 6 - 17 years of age and their families and associated community systems, such as Children's Aid Societies and schools. The primary target population includes children/youth with social/emotional/behavior problems. The services include assessment of needs and strengths of the child/youth and family (if circumstances changed since the last assessment of need), and interventions tailored to meet those assessed needs. Interventions can take place at the Centre, in the family home or foster home, in the school, and in the community. Individual, group, and family therapy are available, as well as specialized parent training and education. Specialized services are available when indicated, participation in the Arson Prevention Program, psychiatric services, and adolescent activity groups. Youth Criminal Justice Program: This program provides an array of multi-disciplinary services for youth in conflict with the law including psychological assessments and psychiatric consultation for adolescents between the ages of 12-18 years who are referred by the Youth Court or probation services. A variety of treatment interventions are also provided including individual, group, and family counseling. Adolescent Sexual Offender Outpatient Program: The Adolescent Sexual Offender Treatment Group is designed for adolescents who have sexually offended. The group is based on current models of best practice intervention that both optimize treatment outcomes for youth and address community safety. The group is facilitated by center staff and also utilizes other community resources. Referrals for the group are accepted from individuals, police services, probation services and the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Society. Once the referral is made the youth is seen immediately for an initial assessment to determine the most appropriate level of treatment. Adjunct assessments such as psychiatry and psychological assessments are not routinely done for each youth at the time of admission but are available through the treatment process if needed. Youth Mental Health Court Service: The Youth Mental Health Court Coordinator works with the justice system to support the mental health needs of youth 16 and older who are in conflict with the law under the jurisdiction of the Youth Justice Court. The program diverts youth with mental health needs out of the formal justice system where appropriate. Youth who agree to participate voluntarily follow a diversion plan developed with the Youth Mental Health Court Coordinator and approved by the crown attorney. Diversion services include access to a multi-disciplinary team at Windsor Regional Children Centre. For youth already involved in community services a collaborative diversion plan can be developed. Upon completion of the diversion plan the youth’s criminal charges are dropped. Where diversion is not appropriate youth are linked to developmentally appropriate mental health services. Referrals are accepted from the youth who has been charged, family, lawyers, police, probation, mental health professionals and community agencies. |
